Enchanted Woodland Experiences at Dulwich Prep London

Amidst the many challenges faced by independent schools during this pandemic, is the particular difficulty of ensuring a safe admissions process, especially for the Early Years. With social interactions outside of a school or workplace being limited to groups of six, it is no longer feasible to assess young children indoors whilst ensuring they keep a distance which is safe for themselves, their families and for staff. At Dulwich Prep London, whose Early Years schools 159 out of their 826 pupils, an idea was launched to bring the Early Years assessment forward to the Autumn, enabling children to be assessed outdoors before the frostier days of January set in.

The ‘Enchanted Woodland Experience’ swiftly began to form, and the team set about transforming the woodland into a magical realm nestled within the heart of Dulwich. Over three Autumnal Saturdays, the woods came alive. Colourful lanterns, fairy lights and mobiles handmade from recycled materials by the creative team at Dulwich Prep London hung from branches, catching the light from time to time as the sun broke through the canopies. Upon entry into the wood, children chose a wand and then made their way through the pixie village onto their first activity.

Dulwich Prep London’s rich English woodland is home to three types of oak and is a haven for mini beasts, providing a stimulating learning environment for children which incorporates the natural world. The woodland curriculum integrates literacy and numeracy, and children are encouraged to find patterns in their outdoor surroundings. Through the Eco Rules, children are taught to be respectful of the world around them, and to care for plants, animals and each other. Over the coming year, Dulwich Prep London hopes to partner with local societies to foster education and further enhance children’s understanding of our ecosystem.

If you missed the Autumn Enchanted Woodland Experience and would like to register your child for the January 2021 date, please register on our website before November 13th 2020.
